The Cut menu redesign

Redesign of the main menus for Waterloo bar and restaurant, The Cut.

The brief was to make something that could be updated regularly in-house. The final outcome is printed on standard off-white office paper and attached to a backing board using an elastic band.

The bellyband is also regularly updated to promote tie-ins with The Cut’s neighbour The Young Vic theatre.

The backing board is made of super durable and environmentally friendly Richlite, a material made from hundreds of sheets of compressed paper, and used in architectural fittings and kitchen utensils.

Bath Artists’ Studios Open Studios 2010

We wanted to make this document useful as well as informational, whilst still being eye-catching enough to jump out of the leaflet racks; so using the house-style of a single spot colour and refined typography that we’d established in our last project for the studios, we added a floor plan to help visitors navigate this labyrinthine complex.

Upon first visiting the studio, we instantly spotted and fell in love with the vast array of locks, latches and handles that adorn the doors of all the studios. These characterful bits of hardware make every studio-front unique, much like the artists hidden behind them. It seemed fitting to feature these in this once-a-year opportunity to see what goes on in a working artists’ studio.

Putting my Heads Together

Book design for Claire Loder, an artist working in ceramics with a penchant for faces and heads.

She needed a limited edition book to use as a self-promotional item and as a place to gather some recent work, sketches and thoughts. Needless to say, we leapt at the chance to help. Being interested primarily in faces, mirrors play an important part in Loder’s inspiration. Taking this as a starting point we designed a mylar sleeve in which to house the book and hide the first face on the cover which is revealed upon opening.

Each book also contains a hand-drawn face on the title page, for which we found some lovely photo-corners to be hand-stuck into the 193 copies.

Bath Artists’ Studios programme

We completely redesigned the seasonal programme for this thriving Artists’ Studio complex (which also happens to be the home of Ben International UK Headquarters).

Starting from scratch we completely revamped the old design, introducing editorial features and a much higher image content than the previous design, taking it from a timetable of events to an interesting and collectible piece of literature.

Each issue is printed in a different spot colour, from a palette chosen to alternate between muted shades and vibrant eye-popping tones, to reflect the diversity of events that takes place in this building that houses 60+ artists working in different media.
